John Behr is a British Eastern Orthodox priest and theologian, and Regius Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen, a chair he has held since 2020. He was ordained to the diaconate on September 8, 2001 (the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos) and the priesthood on September 14, 2001 (the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross).

Behr previously taught Patristics at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary from 1995 to 2020, serving as Dean from 2007 to 2017 before becoming the Father Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics. He now serves as a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain.

Behr is the author of a multi-volume series on the formation of early Christian theology, including The Way to Nicaea, The Nicene Faith, and The Mystery of Christ, along with critical editions and translations of Origen, Irenaeus of Lyons, and Gregory of Nyssa, and a major study of the Gospel of John. His scholarship focuses on how the doctrines of the Trinity and Incarnation emerged through the earliest Christian engagement with Scripture. He holds an M.Phil and D.Phil in Theology from the University of Oxford and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2025.
