Michel Bitbol

Philosopher; Author

Michel Bitbol is a researcher in the philosophy of physics, the philosophy of knowledge, and the philosophy of mind.

He is Director of Research at the CNRS, based at the Husserl Archives, ENS, Paris. Together with Bernard d’Espagnat, Jean Petitot, and Hervé Zwirn, he is a founding member of the Collège de Physique et de Philosophie, in collaboration with the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques.

He studied at several universities in Paris, where he successively received a doctorate in medicine in 1980, a doctorate in physics in 1985, and an accreditation to supervise research in philosophy (Habilitation à diriger des recherches) in 1997.

From 1978 to 1990, he conducted scientific research in various fields of biophysics. Beginning in 1990, he turned to the philosophy of physics. He translated and commented on texts of general philosophy and quantum mechanics written by Erwin Schrödinger, and published a book entitled Schrödinger’s Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics (Kluwer, 1996). He has also published three books on a neo-Kantian interpretation of quantum mechanics, as well as on quasi-realism and anti-realism in the sciences, in 1996, 1998, and 2010. In 1997, the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques awarded him the Grammaticakis-Neumann Prize for Philosophy of Science.
