Timothy O’Connor is a Professor of Philosophy at Indiana University Bloomington.

At Indiana, O’Connor is a member of its large and distinguished cognitive sciences program, recently served as chair of its department of philosophy, and has won several awards for both teaching and research excellence. He is an honors graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in philosophy. He went on to study at Cornell University on a Susan Linn Sage Fellowship and received a PhD in philosophy in 1992. After post-doctoral research at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. O’Connor joined the Indiana philosophy faculty in 1993 and was named to his present position in 2005. In addition to research fellowships awarded by Indiana University, O’Connor has held externally-funded visiting fellowships at the University of St. Andrews (1996-97) and at Oriel College, Oxford (2013-14).

O’Connor is a specialist in metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of religion. He has delivered nearly 150 lectures spread across 20 countries and is the author of 60 articles published in scholarly journals and books.

He is the editor of Agents, Causes, and Events: Essays on Indeterminism and Free Will (2005), and a co-editor of Philosophy of Mind: Contemporary Readings (2003); Downward Causation and the Neurobiology of Free Will (2009); A Companion to the Philosophy of Action (2010); Emergence in Science and Philosophy (2010); and Religious Faith and Intellectual Virtue (2014).  His book, Persons and Causes: The Metaphysics of Free Will, was published by Oxford University Press in 2000 and Theism and Ultimate Explanation was published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2008. He is currently writing a book to be titled, Thinking About Faith: Philosophy, Science, and Christian Belief.
